Respiratory protective equipment comes in three general forms: disposable respirators (also known as dust masks), reusable half-facepiece respirators, and full facepiece positive pressure self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA). They are usually either simple or continuous-flow devices. Continuous flow devices use a cartridge containing some type of filter material and/or chemicals that remove contaminants from the air so that fresh air can be breathed by the wearer. However, since these types of systems only have one filter stage they tend to be limited in their protection against highly toxic chemicals and/or gases.

Disposable respirators, also known as dust masks, protect the wearer from large particles such as those released during construction or renovation work. They either have a very low breathing resistance or require no power to operate. This means they give the worker some protection against dust and dangerous gases but not much against toxic chemicals. The usual shape of disposable respirators makes them easy to carry in a pocket or tool belt if required.

Reusable half-facepiece respirators typically come with a flexible rubber facepiece that covers both nose and mouth made up of one or two attached filters that seal around the face allowing fresh air to be breathed by the user while protecting them from inhaling dangerous fumes and fine particles. They are typically less expensive than full facepiece respirators and easier to operate especially by workers with facial hair, glasses, or long hair.

Full-face respirators are similar in design to the half-facepiece but have an entire rubber facepiece that covers the eyes, nose, and mouth rather than just filters for protection against toxic dust, chemicals, gases as well as biological agents such as viruses. Full-face respirators come in a variety of options including self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) used primarily by firefighters and other rescue workers that provide clean air from an attached tank carried on the wearer's back, airline respirators that attach directly to a compressed air tank carried separately from the wearer by an airline hose and powered or unpowered supplied-air respirators that have electrical or compressed gas power units used primarily in industrial applications.
